Additional Notes:
Transplant Families strongly supports the Medical Foods and Formulas Access Act of 2025 (H.R. 5684), which would ensure consistent and comprehensive coverage of medically necessary foods, vitamins, and amino acids for individuals with digestive and inherited metabolic disorders. For many pediatric transplant recipients, access to specialized nutrition is not optional—it is lifesaving. Proper metabolic support is essential for growth, development, immune function, and recovery following solid organ transplantation.
Families caring for medically fragile children already navigate complex treatment regimens, frequent medical appointments, and substantial financial burdens. Gaps or inconsistencies in insurance coverage for medically necessary food place these children at risk of malnutrition, hospitalization, and preventable complications. By standardizing coverage across federal health programs and protecting existing benefits at the state level, H.R. 5684 removes dangerous barriers to care and empowers physicians and caregivers to choose the safest, most effective nutritional therapies—without forcing reliance on feeding tubes or risky alternative treatments.
Transplant Families urges Congress to advance this critical legislation. Ensuring reliable access to medically necessary nutrition is foundational to the health and survival of children with medical challenges, including many in the transplant community. H.R. 5684 represents a meaningful step toward safeguarding their well-being and supporting the families who advocate tirelessly for their care.
