Galway transplant girl continues to improve as family thanks community for support

The parents of an eight year old Headford girl who had two liver transplant operations in London last year have expressed their gratitude for the messages of support they received from the local community over the Christmas period.

Little Polish girl Wiktoria Kubaczyk was unable to return home for the festive season, but her parents Mario and Anna have been taken aback by the support they have received from the people of Headford since she took ill last June.

Both Mario and Anna have been at their only child’s side since she was first rushed to University Hospital Galway in June, before her transfer by air to England, and a fundraising campaign which was started by parents at her school has raised almost €24,000 for the family.

A concert by Matt Cunningham at Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover, on December 21 last raised over €1,500 for the Kubaczyk family, who have not been home since she was flown from Baldonnell to the British capital in late July.

Wiktoria underwent emergency surgery at King’s College Hospital, before undergoing a second, 12-hour liver transplant operation in October which has given her a greater chance of survival.

Medical staff at the London hospital have been pleased by her progress and her condition was described as “stable” over the Christmas and New Year holidays. While there are still concerns over her kidneys, it is hoped that she may be able to return home to Ireland in the next two to three months.
