Patient Waiting List

Ever wonder how many people are on the patient waiting list right now.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network maintain that data which is openly available to the public (http://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/latestData/viewDataReports.asp).

You can define your results through options like region, center, age, organ and many more.  And you can gain more insight into information like what are the major regions for transplant in the U.S and a list of all the current transplant centers.

As well as offering a plethora of transplant data, OPTN also offers a comprehensive guide for transplant patients (http://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/ContentDocuments/PartneringWithTransplantTeam_508v.pdf) answering most common questions one might have.

One of the most fascinating parts of the OPTN website is their explanation of how an organ gets from donor to patient (http://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/about/).  They go in depth to the criteria used to match donor and patient.  And they explain all the medical staff involved and how they fit into this very complex process.

All this information and so much more is included in the amazing resource. This is a must have link for any transplant patient or caregiver.
