A baby from Gore, who suffers from a life threatening condition, is today receiving a much needed liver transplant at Starship Hospital in Auckland.

Elliott Gulliver is 8-months-old, and suffers from biliary atresia, a disease that affects the tubes that carry bile from the liver to the gut.

Elliott’s mother, Rebecca Gulliver, is travelling to Auckland today to be with her husband Fraser, who stays with Elliott at the Ronald McDonald house.

Mrs Gulliver was waiting for her connecting flight from Christchurch to Auckland when contacted by The Southland Times.

“It’s scary, but exciting,” she said.

Khrys Prattley, Elliott’s aunt, said the transplant was a six to eight hour surgery.

It would be at least four months until the Gulliver family would be able to bring Elliott home, Miss Prattley said.
