PITTSBURGH (CNN) – A Pennsylvania teenager in need of a liver transplant may have a new problem on her hands.
A mistake at the hospital may have compromised her personal information.
Alicia Hruby, 15, has a rare disease and needs a liver transplant.
Now, her parents just learned some of her personal medical information may have been compromised.
Donna Hruby, Alicia’s mother, said, “There’s a lot of people who can do a lot of bad things with this information.”
The Hruby’s received a letter from Children’s Hospital that a list of transplant candidates went missing around Christmas.
The hospital discovered that it was missing on Jan. 3 but has been unable to find the document.
According to the letter, the document contained a patient’s name, date of birth, partial address, blood type, height, weight, contact phone numbers, diagnosis information, clinical info and insurance.
Donna said, “If something comes up for maybe a prescription that wasn’t exactly something she takes or any kind of a test that somebody could have done, they could say they’re Alicia.”
The letter says the hospital will provide more training for staff about protecting a patient’s information and conduct a full evaluation to determine if changes need to be made.
The family says they haven’t noticed any billing or credit irregularities but they wish they would have been alerted earlier.
Donna said, “On top of everything else that we have to deal with, we have to now worry about her health information being compromised.”
