Respiratory-season prep for transplant families

ree

Fall means more indoor time and more germs. For kids on immunosuppression, a few small habits—done consistently—go a long way.

Your simple safety rhythm

  • Post your sick-day plan. Keep clinic and after-hours numbers on the fridge (template below).

  • Refresh hand hygiene + masks as needed. Busy indoor spaces or sick season? Pack your Tiny Clean Kit.

  • Ventilate when you can. Crack a window in carpools and gatherings.

  • Keep routine care on track. If you’re due for vaccines or well-checks, ask your transplant team about timing and type for your child.

RSV in infants & young children

Ask your pediatric or transplant team about RSV prevention this season, including whether nirsevimab (monoclonal antibody) is appropriate for your child and when it should be given. Availability and timing vary by region and clinic.

Older teens & boosters

For immunocompromised teens, talk with your team about:

  • Annual flu vaccine (timing and type)

  • Latest COVID-19 booster guidance

  • Routine adolescent updates (e.g., Tdap, meningococcal) based on your teen’s health and time from transplant

What some centers are doing: In carefully selected cases, centers may permit live vaccines like MMR or Varicella after transplant under strict protocols. If you’ve heard this mentioned, bring your questions to clinic. PJP prevention—what families should know

You’ll sometimes hear about PJP (Pneumocystis jirovecii) prevention in clinic. If your team has your child on a preventive medication or is considering changes, here’s an overview in our webinar: “PJP—What caregivers should know (no-jargon basics)” → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAhTVEdMYfUAs always, your transplant team will tailor decisions to your child.
