As the Tin Man in a stage production of “The Wizard of Oz” this weekend, Becca Voltmer will sing “If I Only Had a Heart.” Last year at this time, the 17-year-old Abington girl was wishing for a new one.
It was late April 2014. A common virus caused an inflammation of her heart. She was rushed to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and put on a ventilator and an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation device to assist her body’s circulation. But Becca’s heart continued to fail and by the middle of May, it was clear she needed a transplant.
